Understanding the Wirehaired Kaninchen Dachshund Breed Standard
Key observations inspired by the official WUT Commentary
The FCI Breed Standard No. 148 defines the characteristics of the Dachshund. To support a consistent interpretation of the standard, the World Union for Dachshunds (WUT) published an extensive official commentary addressed to owners, breeders, judges and judge trainees. The purpose of this commentary is not to replace the breed standard, but to explain how it should be understood and applied in practice.
This page does not attempt to reproduce the official standard or the complete WUT Commentary. Instead, it presents some of the explanations that I found particularly valuable while studying these documents. They have helped me better understand the relationship between anatomy, functionality and breed type, and today they influence the way I evaluate Wirehaired Kaninchen Dachshunds in my own breeding programme.
Function Before Beauty
One of the first ideas highlighted in the WUT Commentary deserves special attention.
WUT explains that the first sentence of the FCI Standard already answers the most important question every breeder and judge should keep in mind: What is the purpose of the Dachshund? The commentary reminds us that the Dachshund was developed primarily as an underground hunting dog and that virtually every characteristic of the breed—its temperament, proportions, skeletal structure, angulation, movement, coat and dentition—can be understood through this original purpose. WUT summarizes this philosophy in a simple principle: functionality comes before appearance.
The message of the WUT commentary its about the way we look at the breed. A correct Dachshund should not simply look attractive in the show ring; it should possess the structure and temperament required to perform the work for which the breed was created.
